1965 New York City --
having recently received a copy of "Blonde on Blonde" by the photographer, but having not a clue as to what the future would hold. It would not be until 1968 that I would set eyes on Bob Zimmerman, who was to change my life forever.
All a bit overwhelming if you ask me --if a million miles weren't far away enough, the Nobel prize took him over the moon. I'm more or less (:-)) speechless and I certainly don't know what to do.

So "Love Sick" -- anger, hurt, guilt, confusion, love. My higher self tells me to take my hand out of the fire if it burns. Don't hang with people who it hurts to associate with, the past is gone and done can't be undone, so let THAT go, confusion part of life...live with it or leave it.
So where is the LOVE? Took two to tango, "it hurts me too," honestly wasn't my intention, and confusion and all, it wasn't enough to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

"Masters of War," particularly since that appears to be an ongoing tragedy and the Nobel Prize for Literature, "High Water," "Pay in Blood"...heavy stuff all things considered -- and the unsurpassed "Desolation Row" (how well that summons moody, poignant recollections of areas in that neighborhood, albeit some years later.) If it gets too heavy for your shoulders -- content, context, history, atmosphere, recollection, explanation, responsibility? Brother dear just keep in mind you're "just an artist" (and in God we trust for our freedom of speech) and that fellow "Dylan" also wrote "Cat's in the Well." Just sayin' -- not to rain on his parade in any form or fashion!
"Simple Twist of Fate, Tangled Up in Blue, Make You Feel My Love and "Soon After Midnight" are a downright celestial way to wrap up warm and Lord knows I for one can identify with "Lonesome Day Blues."

Bob Dylan Awarded Nobel Prize for Literature
Oh my. What can one possibly say
except to graciously congratulate him. (If he was my man I'd say I'm proud of
him.) Quite a momentous acknowledgement
and one I doubt even he (despite wanting to be bigger than Elvis...hardly in
the same...apples my dear 'n' oranges) ever imagined. Might be o.k. to shelve "What Good Am
I?" at long last.
Is it a big deal? Of course. Success and being given the seal of approval by one's peers, so to speak, is a good feeling, no doubt, and helps in all manner of ways...if one is so blessed. People do get recognized for all sorts of things (some not that noteworthy), however, any Dylan fan worth their salt knew way back then he was "worthy." Having been controversial, it just took "them" to catch up...sorta like 50 years after the fact, some states actually approve of medical marijuana. A hell of a comparison, but there it is.

Now I bet there will REALLY be no talking to him! :-)

About the madness of becoming what one was never meant to be"

from "The Groom is Still Waiting at the

From all reports his recent concert went off well. I certainly appreciated the song set
lists. Some of his greatest and best of
his work of the past and some more recent.
One article complaining about the screens (which seemed o.k. to me from
videos) cited the following:
“I like the
cool way you look at me/Everything about you is bringing me misery”-Bob Dylan,
“Buckets of Rain”
Hm.
Following is
another personal reaction to goings on:
(a snippet from a concert goers review):
"I hope dedication
and interest in the songs of the Great American songbook will
inspire him to
write a proper love song based in the present instead of
some dream about the future or bitterness about the past."
Yeah well. First of all there were plenty of
"proper" love songs. First one
to come to mind immediately was "You Angel You" (which I doubt would
be appreciated at this juncture). There
are more songs about love without regret or longing, I bet, if one wanted to
get into it. In fact, at one point I
thought there were too many love songs, but then there are only so many things
one can sing about and he certainly covered everything else -- politics,
religion, social justice, the environment, etc. , etc.
"Silly little love
songs"...are either easy and easily forgotten or memorable and certainly Mr.
Dylan's intention with the so-called Sinatra songs gave a nod to old-fashioned
romance, although those conveyed their share of complaints. Like quite a few other "fans," I'm also sort of glad that these have been put to
rest (so MANY great songs of his own to choose from). (I guess I should delete the line
from my writing for him (considering the added -Why try to change me now?- Well, yes there IS that...all the good advice easier said than done and as it is said, there are those who don't need it and those who need it, don't heed it.
now that his symbolic gates are solid &
secure
he reserves the right to visit dead men's
songs
That
was then and not now. It's not necessary
to change I don't believe. But I may change my mind, for all that it may matter in the great scheme of things
Also,
I tend to thing writers either need personal experience or need to be
inspired. To be in love is one thing,
to be happily in love is another,
ergo "Love Sick." Of
course one can always pretend, but then it's not from the gut (heart, I dare
say) and it often won't "work" because it lacks the necessary
emotion, substance and verity.
What
are y'a gonna do? Not everybody is
"lucky" in love, although everyone wants to be. It's a fact.
Imagine, however, a grand passion
nevertheless and imagine something quite out of the ordinary and that being in
some ways far more romantic than one
CAN imagine. Many a song of his would
not have been written had it been otherwise.
Besides,
I'm sure the person who made that comment is not in their 70s. With so many of his fans it's never enough
and after all, the man wrote what some 522 songs to date!?

1976 - Bob Dylan's triumphant tour (Rolling Thunder Review), after the success of "Blood on the Tracks" and "Desire"...with various women in tow and blew my mind was the particularly insightful and affecting song "Oh Sister" and the bountiful, luxurious "One More Cup of Coffee".
What was this woman looking and waiting for, hanging around Montegue Street at the time ? Doesn't quite fit, if you know what I mean? "The Empress" had a strange way of operating to be sure.

“My friend, blood shaking my heart
The awful daring of a moment’s surrender
Which an age of prudence can never retract
By this, and this only, we have existed
Which is not to be found in our obituaries
Or in memories draped by the beneficent spider
Or under seals broken by the lean solicitor
In our empty rooms”

Oh well, I love you pretty baby
You're the only love I've ever known
Just as long as you stay with me
The whole world is my throne
Beyond here lies nothin'
Nothing we can call our own
You're the only love I've ever known
Just as long as you stay with me
The whole world is my throne
Beyond here lies nothin'
Nothing we can call our own
Well, I'm moving after midnight
Down boulevards of broken cars
Don't know what I do without it
Without this love that we call ours
Beyond here lies nothin'
Nothing but the moon and stars
Down boulevards of broken cars
Don't know what I do without it
Without this love that we call ours
Beyond here lies nothin'
Nothing but the moon and stars
Down every street there's a window
And every window made of glass
We'll keep on loving pretty baby
And every window made of glass
We'll keep on loving pretty baby

Talk about dreamin'
Actually, yes a few nights ago. He and I were sitting next to each other, someplace outside at a table, who knows where, facing toward something in the distance. I guess he must have been a little nervous, 'cause he did fidget for a while, but then turned to me and smiled. It was nice!
Had A Dream About you, Baby
I got to see you baby, I don’t care
It may be someplace, baby, you say where
I had a dream about you, baby
Had a dream about you, baby
Late last night you come a-rollin’ across my mind
You got the crazy rhythm when you walk
You make me nervous when you start to talk
I had a dream about you, baby
Had a dream about you, baby
Late last night you come a-rollin’ across my mind
Standin’ on the highway, you flag me down
Said, take me Daddy, to the nearest town
I had a dream about you, baby
Had a dream about you, baby
Late last night you come a-rollin’ across my mind
The joint is jumpin’
It’s really somethin’
The beat is pumpin’
My heart is thumpin’
Spent my money on you honey
My limbs are shakin’
My heart is breakin’
You kiss me, baby, in the coffee shop
You make me nervous, you gotta stop
I had a dream about you, baby
Had a dream about you, baby
Late last night you come a-rollin’ across my mind
You got a rag wrapped around your head
Wearing a long dress fire engine red
I had a dream about you, baby
Had a dream about you, baby

On another note: "The Ugliest Girl in the World" by Bob Dylan
The woman that I love she got a hook in her nose
her eyebrows meet, she wears second hand clothes
She speaks with a stutter and she walks with a hop
I don't know why I love her but I just can't stop
You know I love her
Yeah I love her

I'm in love with the Ugliest Girl in the World

Portal to an Undisclosed World
In the wake of his triumphs, memorable and sustaining
endeavors and the enduring power to create interest and beauty, more than one
besotted hopeful being became enmeshed in his galvanizing orbit -- struggling,
flailing to keep a pace with the monumental magnitude of the presence he
imprinted on our times.
Enriched, yes.
Inspired, no doubt.
First and foremost his eloquent lyrics are exemplary, for
the most part, and the melodies he composed personify, without reservation, all
that is glorious. Second to none his comprehension and expertise gratifies.
The sum total of his work is considered the perfection
and epitome of accomplishment. Thus a
notable life and a meaningful legacy.
***
Within a
corridor of years, resides a chalice of reciprocity, a well kept secret in
plain sight, harboring his guarded heart and revealing the complexities of his mind
vis-à-vis another --
each struggling for compassion and courage to conquer suspicion and
dereliction.
Acknowledged, admired, encouraged and rewarded...outside
the norm, outside the parameters of what one would have a right to expect --
inside the doors of their ephemeral joint domicile, all that ever is, all that there ever was, is in play.
On the line recently was the last invitation for eye
to eye accord, a single act of faith that could have been the miracle of
another chance.
Fate, however, would have it that never again would
they attempt to disentangle the knot that could destroy their carefully crafted
and nurtured dreams. Rather the death of loss than to lay bare the flawed
underbelly of what heaven had not wrought.
***
Always in evidence, were emotions and qualities --
romantic, tender, adventurous, demonstrative, trusting, intrepid and a
necessary determined, if tenuous contact. Concurrent with affection and
appreciation, disappointment and regret were the prerequisite foil.
These artistic, cerebral avenues and explorations were
neither self-sustaining nor indistinguishable, for like upon like would not have yielded promise.
Alas, as demanding affiliations must surrender to the
immeasurably deplorable maw of requirement, passion and fierce attachment,
seasoned with idealism, occasionally results in disillusionment and can sabotage
creativity -- and success, generally regarded as positive, may cause a fall-out
which, more often than not, is a sliver short of tragic.

Brought high, brought low, tell it unto me once more,

from the back of beyond he came,
inexplicable faith fusing with oblivious ignorance,
innocent eyes belying a voracious mind --
he faced the gauntlet
charisma held in reserve,
ambiguity & eloquence in abeyance,
embellishments too were set aside --
until such time Source gave leave
a singular fate, beyond comprehension,
a singular fate, beyond comprehension,
his boots presaged wanderlust,
maneuvered in and out of heartbreak --
to another side, love did stray
searchlights crisscrossed igniting discovery,
skeins of insight, conception,
zeal & ardor fostered epic creation --
freedom's chimes proclaimed mythical glory
Concordia's striking tresses & heartfelt bounty
charmed & granted generosity,
throughout, competition ran riot --
distinction & renown were within reach
overcome, amid vying interests & demands,
too much too soon, for just like a socialite,
desired by kings, another slipped into his room --
destined to deliver a troika of sons
time stampeded, headlong& hell bent,
visionaries converged, events collided,
transformed, good & evil aligned --
his time had come
lyrics expounded philosophy& ethics,
propelled by ambition, recognition beckoned
altruism required no self-sacrifice...music sufficed --
a rally for peace kindled universal consciousness
audacity amidst nefarious company,
without connection, the road welcomed his path
incandescent with plangent desolation --
he set cats among pigeons
amped, flagrant with abandon & rebellion
exuberance & passion channeled his views,
imagination inhabited songs unique unto himself --
anthems redeemed the conscience of a generation
in a league of his own, extended & beleaguered,
treading the tail of the tiger, toying with ruination
captivating, unexplored hypnotic provinces evolved --
a commanding double masterpiece reigned supreme
accolades & eminence persuasively inflamed
in an ever intensifying array of distilled essence
mandates of art provoked flirtation with the abyss --
fated his epitaph...never to be, the good die young
mountains, source of power & mystery,
signified sanctuary from a defiant, perilous past,
until claiming his next of kin --
death insisted on intimacy
austere, resigned, sorrowful
enveloped in domestic patterns, embracing lore,
his spirit resurrected events of centuries past --
mirroring undisturbed rhythms of all there is
summoned, captivated by any day now, another waited,
seeking, unaware release was in the moment,
offering idealism& solace, startled by romanticism --

"Is Your Love in Vain?" by Dylan
Do you love me, or are you just extending goodwill?
Do you need me half as bad as you say, or are you just feeling guilt?
I’ve been burned before and I know the score
So you won’t hear me complain
Will I be able to count on you
Or is your love in vain?
Are you so fast that you cannot see that I must have solitude?
When I am in the darkness, why do you intrude?
Do you know my world, do you know my kind
Or must I explain?
Will you let me be myself
Or is your love in vain?
Well I’ve been to the mountain and I’ve been in the wind
I’ve been in and out of happiness
I have dined with kings, I’ve been offered wings
And I’ve never been too impressed
All right, I’ll take a chance, I will fall in love with you
If I’m a fool you can have the night, you can have the morning too
Can you cook and sew, make flowers grow
Do you understand my pain?
Are you willing to risk it all Or is your love in vain?
I’ve been burned before and I know the score
So you won’t hear me complain
Will I be able to count on you
Or is your love in vain?
Are you so fast that you cannot see that I must have solitude?
When I am in the darkness, why do you intrude?
Do you know my world, do you know my kind
Or must I explain?
Will you let me be myself

And the seas began to part
And the people that confronted him were many
And he was told but these few words

From "Be Better Talk This Over" by Bob Dylan, as follows:
I think we better talk this over
Maybe when we both get sober
You'll understand I'm only a man
Doing the best that I can.
This situation can only get rougher
Why should we needlessly suffer ?
Let's call it a day go our own different way
Before we decay.
You don't have to be afraid of looking into my face
We've done nothing to each other time will not erase.
I feel displaced, I got a low-down feeling
You have been two-faced, you been double-dealing
I took a chance, got caught in the trance
Of a downhill dance.
Oh child, why you wanna hurt me ?
I'm exiled you can't convert me
I'm lost in the haze of your delicate ways
With both eyes glazed.
You don't have to yearn for love, you don't have to be alone
Somewhere in the universe there's a place that you can call home.
I guess I'll be leaving tomorrow
If I have to beg, steal or borrow
It'd be great to cross paths in a day and a half
Look at each other and laugh.
But I don't think it's liable to happen
Like the sound of one hand clapping
The vows that we kept are now broken and swept
Beneath the bed where we slept.
Don't think of me and fantasize of what we never had
Be grateful for what we've shared together and be glad
Why should we got on watching each other through a telescope ?
Eventually we'll hang ourselves on all this tangled rope.
Oh babe, time for a new transition
I wish I was a magician
I would wave a wand and tie back the bond
That we've both gone beyond."

BEFORE THE FACT
Usurped by fatalities
never imagined, the death of hope entwined with facing down one's own anger at
being duped by the insubstantial belief in super inundated fairy tales, this
recognition saturated is yet with unsurpassed reliance on miracles.
But the dignity of
stoicism and the resolute adherence substantiated by a reliable past makes
feasible the belief that you will reckon to rein in victory over trepidation
and alarming result dependent, paralyzing disparaging self-regard and
paradoxically deeply entrenched pride, to forgive encrypted and unhinged
judgments and attributes and comprehend instead that the ingress of forgiveness
and satiety, the granting of a boon to a worshipful friend and admirer
supersedes self and that in heaven's terms, this trumps a world of accolades.
Achievement kept you
upright but love kept you accessible and being cognizant that suspicions and
doubt be also bound up in our intimate regard and assumptions -- all the more the reason to further our joined
experience.
What not greatness of
melody, beauty and worded expression and exploration of devotion and admiration
would accomplish so might what was kept in reserve -- reason. To be thrust into pursuing the matrix of this
companionship and find there purchase and the balm of resolution -- not the
explosive drive and superlative but treacherous expectation of storybook
perfection, but in the pressing need of needful things attended to before
passing on to parts unknown.
There then to find
trenchant promise and consistent leverage of probity and regard that features a
modicum of respect and a measure of tenderness, so long expressed, no longer in
need now of yet again being lured, tested and exposed.
Let me not expound
and recommend, plead and bemoan, suggest and point out former attributes that
mutually beguiled and entranced.
But rather seeing
that only you are empowered with the way and means, let me share with you the
responsibility of my asking and you the doing, readily as key will fit lock.

There's snakes in the garden. Blood on the vines. Every time I slip
away It feels like a crime (Hush) Underneath the shadows The aching grows The
beam of the moon is all you have now. (Hush, soul for sale) There's ropes in
the hallway
Scars in the silver I know there will come a day When red runs the
river Keep the light on, keep the light on I'm waiting Keep the light on, keep
the light on
I'm waiting for you All the silver lining that is hiding the color
(Hush, soul for sale) Don't make a sound Soul for sale
There's snakes in the garden Blood on the vines I can't wait anymore I can't wait anymore

...until hell froze over
the clans have assembled,
their heritage speaks volumes
a solemn speaker restores calm
in meeting halls, laughter wanes
attic skeletons caper about
the emperor's new clothes stun
affronted by misdirection --
the ancients enjoy the gaffe
windows of opportunity glare
--slippery slope temptations
tail chasing robotics are in play --
neither here nor there has its say
the test of time skulked by --
it wasn't all that notable
fervor quit with snide remarks,
but sonnets sustained the day
hard held hostages of dreams
promise only sparse greetings
almost all have an agenda --
who is but a good time friend?
if bliss were commodity,
let us assiduously buy it
if wish would bring touch --
serve it to the consort and me
for Pyramus and Thisbe
expectations caused regret
devotion enhanced their lives
-- joy thrown to the winds
avid pursuit & intense stricture --
a role determined from the start
sorrow spoke seven languages --
a case for accord & silence
a benign force of will decides,
as she forfeits playing the past
& an empathic link survives
as he jump starts his drive
girl singers and violin players --
innocent or profligate conduct,
good for the gander, the saying goes
it wasn't a nun that he chose
poverty & boss men, her lot --
neglect infidelity & frost,
inspiration, fools gold, fantasy
& ill-mannered presumption
by default, there were others
-- a surcease from
loneliness
his love songs dazzled --
his presence forever withheld
leave it be, lonely one ---
the gathering of tributes past
sleep with your dreary ghosts
and learn to take it on the chin
the world served as witness --
he proved he could conquer it
his women seemed ubiquitous --
all departed, sooner or later
escapees from common place --
wonder, their companion piece
his craft extracted life's blood
a saga engineered by history
love was distilled into myth,
resentment reduced to gall --
a fairie imp's insect web
awe-inspiring -- and perfidious
Hadrian's wall survived
intact
a plethora of unremitting misery
unfinished business, a fait accompli --
scorched senseless by never to be
next step Hades' vestibule --
no surprise on this fated plight
words have done their deed
Pan has cast his reedy curse
the king is ever on the road --
a pawn captured his queen
the celestial chess master labors --
the bishops decry it as theft
control & fear is thus in place --
invading their consciousness
if love was a gift, take it now
even Nepenthe grants no relief
prone to flights of fancy --
they romanticized lunacy,
met criteria, satiated the gods
hadn't they hand-fasted their pledge?
wherefore a guarded missive,
what concern & fatalistic drive?
confrontation's hollow guise
& head over heel's tragic demise
a curious path at a standstill --
strange currents & destiny's rule
there is sovereignty in yesteryear,
so bless me darlin' & I'll bless you too.

Time passes slowly up here in the mountains
We sit beside bridges and walk beside fountains
Catch the wild fishes that float through the stream
Time passes slowly when you’re lost in a dream
Once I had a sweetheart, she was fine and good-lookin’
We sat in her kitchen while her mama was cookin’
Stared out the window to the stars high above
Time passes slowly when you’re searchin’ for love
Ain’t no reason to go in a wagon to town
Ain’t no reason to go to the fair
Ain’t no reason to go up, ain’t no reason to go down
Ain’t no reason to go anywhere
Time passes slowly up here in the daylight
We stare straight ahead and try so hard to stay right
Like the red rose of summer that blooms in the day
Time passes slowly and fades away
We sit beside bridges and walk beside fountains
Catch the wild fishes that float through the stream
Time passes slowly when you’re lost in a dream
Once I had a sweetheart, she was fine and good-lookin’

Indomitable Ghosts
they achieved their objectives --
entrenched, discarded & back
we wonder at the why of it
how lost to our own devices?
shared thoughts, united dreams
gritty sorrow & strange joy --
paths littered with tribulation,
glory spangled by heaven
adroit marionettes performed,
writing diligently, playing fair
oft times their wheels spinning--
the key master ever in control
a union stars deemed unlikely --
creativity flourished nonetheless
inciting, sobering, meandering
a hothouse of rarified vision
you captured prevailing winds
a selfless tone restored faith
war mongers were exposed --
to that end, your purpose clear
memory embedded in allegory
you chastised her for making do --
an unenviable fate to endure,
when all the while it was you
your glorious fantasy promises
provided neither bed nor board --
but the hearth of your words
gave her battered heart respite
you kindled luminosity
& rendered tedium tolerable
it was old before it was new --
past destinies intermingling
all doubt & fear gone at last?
your coldest kiss freed her not
actors consigned to a role
& history repeats itself
too little too late at this point --
a provoking memory merely?
see hope emerge surreptitiously
& accord reflect a shining past
a nod, an optimistic word
feelings resilient & genuine
a lighter vein, a sanguine mood
unshackled ancient ghosts
what matter their sly comments
the dye was cast for Peggy Day
nothing to say but time to act --
that blatant exit door is fact
primal recollections baptize--
birds flutter and sashay forth,
steeped in warmth & tradition
a harvest home wreath awaits
deliverance from, forgiveness of --
an embrace to melt our distress
in the fullness of our time --
that tempered ore may yet blaze

letters of intent see you on a street of unredeemed apologies
not taking into account the badly scarred and mercy,
bonds that only a power greater than ours can break,
remember when only sustaining fires burned
at the moment of our meeting of unabashed splendor?
had I unlimited resources and a patent for fulfillment
had I a cradle for every homeless babe
would I temper the steel blade?
could I receive the host?
soldiers permeate history's advance
souls in unison abound...
clinging, merging --
swept into the fulcrum of creation --
trumpeting about soaring and being left behind --
fractured accounts of trembling and insurrection
had I the makings of unwarranted celebration,
had I the time for revised agendas and fallen angels
would I fend off the encroaching dark?
could I temper the burgeoning dread?
portents of solitary signposts and sole survivors --
witness to momentous events --
--party to dissimulation
as duty demands and necessity dictates
all there ever was and all there is arrives
when every bet is laid for our last chance

"Bye and Bye" by Bob Dylan
By
and by, I'm breathin' a lover's sigh
While I'm sittin' on my watch so I can be on time
I'm singin' love's praises with sugar coated rhyme
By and by, on you I'm castin' my eye
I'm paintin' the town, swingin' my partner around
Well I know who I can depend on, I know who to trust
I'm watchin' the boats, I'm studyin' the dust
I'm paintin' the town, makin' my last go-round
While I'm scufflin' and I'm shufflin' and I'm walkin' on briars
I'm not even aquainted with my old desires
I'm rollin' slow, I'm doin' all I know
I'm tellin' myself I've found true happiness
That I still got a dream that hasn't been repossessed
I'm rollin' slow goin' where the wild roses grow
Well, the future is already a thing of the past
You were my first love and you will be my last
Papa gone mad, Mama she's feelin' sad
Well, I'm gonna baptize you in fire so you can sin no more
I wanna establish my rule through civil war
Gonna make you see just how loyal and true a man can be.
